Paddy
yield has risen considerably in Madhya Pradesh due to
Madagascar Method. The results of this method are now
visible in the fields of farmers. Surendra Singh
Patel, a resident of village Matha in Satna district,
has surprised everyone by producing 1.65 quintals of
paddy in his small field measuring only 1800 square
feet.

Madagascar
is a method in which special production
technology is more important than the kind of
paddy. It was developed in the year 1983. The
technique covers every stage of paddy
production right from nursery management to
plantation and water management.

Shri
Patel, a marginal farmer, did not have enough fertile
land to meet the financial requirements of his family.
Due to pressure exerted by his family members, Shri
Patel had almost made up his mind to change his
profession. At this juncture, he happened to meet
agriculture officers. They advised Shri Patel to adopt
Madagascar Method for growing paddy. Following the
advice, Shri Patel decided to sow paddy through
Madagascar Method on a 60X30 feet plot. After setting
his field right for sowing, Shri Patel removed the
herbs which are harmful for paddy crop with the help
of agricultural appliances. On the advice of IFFCO,
Shri Patel prepared phospho-sulphur-nitrate compost
and added the same to the soil. After this, he planted
paddy seedlings at equal distance of 25 cms in rows
made through farm appliance and then undertook
watering for a stipulated period.
An
elated Shri Patel says that farmers in the village
used to look at me with astonishment when I was
undertaking paddy farming through scientific method.
But I continued with firm determination, which has now
resulted in copious yield of paddy. The fragrance of
Pusa Sugandh paddy produced in my field, can be felt
in surrounding villages as well. Shri Patel is now
identified as a progressive farmer. Last year, area MP
Shri Ganesh Singh and MLA Shri Ramlakhan Patel also
visited his field, inspected the Madagascar Method and
had a word of praise for the same.
