Contemplation on Lok Sabha election dates soon

Details of holidays and exam schedules sought

Instructions for prompt action

Bhopal : December 20, 2008

The Election Commission of India is going to contemplate soon on fixing the dates for Lok Sabha elections. It has requisitioned details about the public holidays and other vacations as well as schedules of high and higher secondary schools. The Chief Electoral Officer has been asked to initiate action in this connection by December 22.

The Election Commission of India has given similar instruction to its units in all the states in a run up to the Lok Sabha election preparations. The commission is of the view that all the poll-related preparations should be completed well in time to avoid last-minute problems and eliminate mistakes and oversights.

The Chief Electoral Officer has been asked to send the list of holidays approved by the state government for the year 2009 apart from the local holidays at the district level.

The Chief Electoral Officer has also been asked to obtain copies of exam schedules of high and higher secondary schools and send the same to the commission at the earliest. The commission is of the view that Board examinations should start in the early March and end during the same month.
