Bhopal : Sunday, May 22, 2005 Updated 18:06 IST

Ashram schools are being run for providing educational facilities to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes boys and girls in the forest areas and far off areas, where no such facilities are available for them.

Educational facilities from first to eighth standards are being made available to them in these ashram schools. Hostel facilities for all the S.C. and S.T. students are also available in these ashram schools. Residential arrangements have been made for the teachers in the premises of these ashram schools.

Every student seeking admission to these ashram schools is eligible for getting a stipend. A monthly stipend of Rs. 350 for the boy and Rs. 360 for the girl will be paid to the students studying in these ashram schools for 10 months. In addition to this, state scholarship of Rs. 20 and Rs. 30 per month will be paid to the students studying in sixth to eighth class respectively and scholarship of Rs. 30 and Rs. 40 per month will be paid to the students of IX and X classes respectively. There is also a provision of monthly scholarship of Rs. 15 for 10 months for the students studying in third to fifth classes.

Admissions to these ashram schools are given on the recommendation of a committee constituted for this purpose. Top priority in admission is given to those students who had studied there last year. The admission forms are given to the students free of cost and they can be had from the superintendents of the respective ashram schools. Orders for admission are given by the collectors on the recommendation of the admission committee.

The panchayat institutions have also to play their roles in the ashram schools. The inspection of the ashram schools is made by the gram panchayat, its special committee or its authorised member. The janpad panchayats have to shoulder the responsibility of running the ashram schools in their areas. The panchayats have to look after the management of the mess, admission and maintenance of the ashram schools. The superintendents of such ashram schools are under the control of the district panchayat and the janpad panchayat.

The benefit of admission to the ashram schools can be obtained by contacting the assistant commissioner of the department, district convener, block development officer, education officer of the development block and the mandal convener.
